Growing seasonal crops in raining season for farm’s consumption in the aftermath of MOCHA cyclone

Our vision for the farm goes beyond just cultivating crops. We strive to turn it into a living laboratory and hope for the people of Myanmar. By incorporating permaculture ethics—earth care, people care, and fair share—into every aspect of our work, we aim to inspire and educate the community on sustainable practices that benefit both people and the planet.

In recent times, Rakhine has faced significant challenges, especially in the aftermath of the devastating MOCHA cyclone. The region has been grappling with a severe food shortage, leaving many families without access to sufficient food. In this time of crisis, the local population has heavily relied on emergency aid provided by local and international organizations, social groups, and compassionate individuals.

During this crisis period, producing food for the farm’s sufficient consumption is the first priority. In this rainy season (2023) we have been growing seasonal crops such as long beans, egg-plant, bottle gourd, cucumber and others.

To create a lasting impact, we are focused on planting fruit trees and shady trees throughout the PIM’s farm. These trees will not only serve as a source of delicious and nutritious fruits but also provide shade and improve the microclimate, making the farm more resilient to extreme weather events but also a good demonstration permaculture farm that can catalyst the future permacutlure practitioners to follow this sustainable path.

At PIM, community engagement is at the heart of our efforts. We believe in educating and empowering local residents (agrarian community) to actively participate in the transformation of their own livelihoods. Through workshops, training sessions, and hands-on learning experiences, we encourage community members to adopt permaculture principles in their own gardens and farms. Our journey is just beginning, but we are determined to create a sustainable and regenerative future for Myanmar.
